Department of Family Resource Management
About the department:
Family Resource Management is an evolving field in Home Sciences that deals with various aspects of management of resources, with special emphasis on the relationship of human beings (human resource), interior space (space as a material resource) and the activities that are carried out in the space. The course is both relevant and significant due to the changing needs of human beings with their environment. .
Departmental Objectives
The department achieves the mission of the university ‘An enlightened woman is a source of infinite strength’ by empowering women through the following means:
- By providing the direction for economic independence through provision of vocational job oriented courses – Interior Space Design and Hotel Hospitality Administration.
- To meet the challenges of the changing needs of the society by providing education in consumer studies, use of digital technology and conservation of environment.
- By educating students to inculcate necessary human values for sustaining a congenial family life and also meet social responsibilities by reaching out to the society through community programs, protection of environment, management of scant resources and promoting consumer awareness
- By providing opportunities for self confidence through workshops in personality development, communication skills and also co-curricular and extra -curricular activities.
- By giving training to develop various skills and cultivate entrepreneurial qualities.

Outreach Activities
- Involvement of the faculty and students of Family Resource Management Department in surveys regarding garbage disposal practices
- Remodelling of the guest house in the Pune campus of SNDT Women’s University and design of the community centre of the Department of Adult and Continuing Education
- Newspaper articles in the Marathi daily on various aspects of interior layout and design for the benefit of the public
- Training programs in ‘Housekeeping’ for Canteen boys in various industries in Pune
- Training of domestic servants for NGO Casp Plan
- Participation in exhibitions to promote consumer awareness among the public
- Vocational training to educated unemployed youth through a social welfare organization ‘Manthan Prathisthan”
- Participation in a training program on HRD “Training Women as managers of Higher Educational Institution’
- Training waste pickers ‘Vermi-composting, Recycling and Allied Health Care’ for PMC
- Training anganwadi workers for an NGO Investment in Man Trust
Departmental Activities
Other activities of the department and the faculty besides teaching, learning and evaluation are
- Conduct seminars on subject related themes for faculty and students
- Organize exhibitions and displays of students’ works for parents, school and college students to create awareness about the multi facets of Home Science education
- Conduct programs for and by the alumni
- Provide hands of experiences to students in furniture making, model making, varnishing, painting, rendering, mural making etc
- Create social awareness among students through competitions in ‘Creativity from waste materials’ and socially relevant themes
- Practical experiences during college functions on flower arrangements, hall decoration, table setting etc
- Guidance, mentoring and counseling students
- Participate and present papers in conferences and seminars conducted by academic institutions
- Work as experts in LIC, CAS, syllabus restructure committees
- Work as members of academic bodies of the University and various administrative, curricular and extra curricular committees of the college
- Create learning resources, contribute articles, write books in subject areas
- Upgrade knowledge in related and emerging areas by attending refresher courses, in service training programs.
